The development
The regeneration of Gateshead town centre is now under way following the signing of a development agreement between Spenhill and Gateshead Council and the submission of the planning application. The £150m proposals include a new town square, 42 retail units, offices, a student village, town centre parking and a Tesco store. Pedestrian links will also integrate the town centre with the existing regeneration successes at the quayside.
The scheme will transform Trinity Square into a vibrant centre that the people of Gateshead can be proud of and want to visit.
Our exciting proposals include:
NEW SHOPS
Over 42 new retail units for high street chains, independent shops and banks.
CAFÉS, BARS AND RESTAURANTS
Provision for cafés, bars and restaurants, with some overlooking the new town square.
A NEW TOWN SQUARE
Set at the heart of the scheme is a place where the people of Gateshead can come together, relax and shop. Providing new links through the centre, the square will be a key public space for Gateshead.
STUDENT VILLAGE
A student village with 993 beds located above the shops, with management and social facilities.
NEW TESCO EXTRA SUPERSTORE
Improving the range of goods available and the service provided to Tesco customers is a central part of the proposals. The new store will bring life back into the centre and act as a catalyst for attracting more shops to the area.
CAR PARKING
750 car parking spaces in a new underground car park.
LINKS CONNECTING TO THE REST OF THE TOWN CENTRE
Pedestrian links to the rest of the town centre via High Street, West Street and Jackson Street.
